Comenius

Period: 2007-2013
Budget: EUR 1 047 million

The Comenius programme aims at improving the quality and maintaining the introduction of the European dimension of school education by supporting transnational co-operation between schools and institutions active in the field of education. It enables educational staff to benefit from mobility possibilities in the framework of initial and/or in-service training, promotes intercultural awareness, and encourages language learning.

The main goal is that at least one pupil in twenty gets involved in joint educational activities during the period of the programme.

The programme supports the following actions:

Individual mobility

• In-service training for teachers enabling individuals to participate in 1-4 week-mobility programmes.
• Work-experience for future language teachers – lasting 3 to 8 months
• Upper secondary pupil mobility –a new action – spending up to one school year abroad. The selection procedure is carried out by national agencies. The grant will cover the real costs of travel and pupils will receive a monthly sum for accommodation and subsistence.

School partnerships

This includes a colourful variety of collaboration in the form of joint project activities, mobility actions, exchanges, meetings and so on. The standard duration of a partnership is 3 years.

The target group of Comenius includes all types of public and private schools (general, vocational, technical) at the pre-primary, primary and secondary levels located in the participating countries. Comenius Language Projects include non-school institutions as well.
